World Math Day 2011

World Math Day will be on March 1st this year. If you have not heard about it before, visit the official website: www.worldmathsday.com.

If you are in Grade 2, then you will learn about World Math Day in Computer class. You will be given your own username and password to go onto the site for practice anytime this month. If you are in Grades 3-5 you will get your sign-in details from either Ms Suk or your classroom teacher.

Grade 1 students will not spend any Computer class time playing the game, but if you are interested, you may have an adult help you sign-up at home and play whenever you wish outside of school time.

If you have your username and password already, click on ‘Sign In’ at the top of page. Then click on ‘Play Now’. Choose your level and begin! The site will then search around the world for who else in your age category is online at the exact same time, and you will compete against them by answering simple basic facts problems for 60 seconds.

Here is what it looks like when you are in the middle of a 60 second game. 3 strikes (wrong answers) and you're out!

It is just practice until 1 March. But it is so much fun! When it is 1 March your games and scores count toward the total for you, your class, and your school, and it is possible to win prizes.

Enjoy playing!

CDC – Starfall and Winnie the Pooh

CDC students have come a very long way since the start of the year! Most of the students needed a lot of help to use the mouse, but now they have almost mastered the skills of pointing and clicking the left mouse button. Some children are beginning to make choices about which parts of a game they want to play, and to navigate www.starfall.com. We always start by choosing a letter on the ABC blocks page, but then students may choose a digital story from the ‘Learn to Read’ page. Zac the Rat is a favorite!

Part way through each session, students are given the option to change to the Winnie the Pooh game, where they have a blank picture to ‘paint’. (Sorry I cannot get clear screen shots from this program to post here).

How can I help at home?

It is not essential for CDC students to use at computer at home, they are still very young. But if they have an interest in doing so, and you have one you don’t mind them using, then it is a good idea to observe how they use the mouse. Sometimes it helps if an adult or older sibling can place a hand gently over the top of theirs, to guide them to click and move the mouse where appropriate. Allow the student to move and click the mouse independently whenever possible.

Grade 2 MS Word test

Graded papers went home in the last two weeks showing your test on formatting in MS Word. The test required the students to copy a sentence, then to change the font, size and color of text, and add a picture. The test was primarily on following instructions, and we completed the test together as a class, one step at a time. It was a great test of patience for us, wasn’t it Grade 2? Results from this test contribute toward the Computer grade for the Quarter 2 report cards.

In Grade 2 we are working on saving our documents to our USB flash drives. However we will not be graded on this, it is just good practice for next year, and it will be nice to have some evidence of our time in Computer class to take home with us at the end of this school year!

Grade 1 Kid Pix Project

Graded papers went home in the last two weeks showing your child’s drawing and labeling of body parts in Kid Pix. This project was completed in Computer class over 3 sessions. If you have any questions about the results, please email me, or come and see me. The mark from this project contributes toward their Quarter 2 report card grade. As with all specialist subjects at ASK, the grade is based primarily on effort in Computer class.

I am very proud of the students’ drawing and labeling skills. Technology requires us to follow a lot of steps, and it only take one wrong click of the mouse to make a mistake! It was very challenging to draw pictures using the mouse rather than a pencil.

Well done Grade 1!
