Computer mouse games for young children

If your child has difficulty using the mouse, then here are some websites that have great games for mouse practice:

http://jacksonpollock.org/

Click on the picture to start on a blank page. Move the mouse to paint. Click the mouse to change colors. This is a website that we are using in class for most grade levels, so your child may already know what to do. Be careful – it’s quite addictive, even for adults! 🙂

This is a story that the children listen to and follow the instructions. It is important to have sound so they can hear what to do.

This ‘Bees and Honey’ site could be good for CDC or KG1 kids. It teaches moving the mouse to an object, clicking on an object, and dragging and dropping. It can be a little bit tricky as the objects are slowly moving.

Please note that a ‘single click’ is introduced in CDC. ‘Drag and drop’ is introduced for KG1 students, but some do require assistance with this. ‘Double click’ is not introduced until KG2, and some children are still working on this skill.

The above games might be fun for any child to play, even if they are already skilled at using the mouse! We have not necessarily played these games in class, so they will probably be brand new to your child.

These sites I found as part of another blog Ask a Tech Teacher.

Grade 2 MS Word test

Graded papers went home in the last two weeks showing your test on formatting in MS Word. The test required the students to copy a sentence, then to change the font, size and color of text, and add a picture. The test was primarily on following instructions, and we completed the test together as a class, one step at a time. It was a great test of patience for us, wasn’t it Grade 2? Results from this test contribute toward the Computer grade for the Quarter 2 report cards.

In Grade 2 we are working on saving our documents to our USB flash drives. However we will not be graded on this, it is just good practice for next year, and it will be nice to have some evidence of our time in Computer class to take home with us at the end of this school year!

Grade 1 Kid Pix Project

Graded papers went home in the last two weeks showing your child’s drawing and labeling of body parts in Kid Pix. This project was completed in Computer class over 3 sessions. If you have any questions about the results, please email me, or come and see me. The mark from this project contributes toward their Quarter 2 report card grade. As with all specialist subjects at ASK, the grade is based primarily on effort in Computer class.

I am very proud of the students’ drawing and labeling skills. Technology requires us to follow a lot of steps, and it only take one wrong click of the mouse to make a mistake! It was very challenging to draw pictures using the mouse rather than a pencil.

Well done Grade 1!
